Hurricane Sandy just doesn't want to leave us alone. Even though we only got the tropical storm force winds for a day the rain is creating havoc around the entire country. It has been raining nonstop for 3-4 days (4 in the South). The entire Southern pennisula has major flooding, mud slides and rock slides. Thousands have lost their homes due to flooding. Not just water in their house but their houses literally carried away by the rushing water. The lower parts of Port au Prince are under water as are parts of the North coast. Every department (state) has been affected. Every river in the country is at flood stage. The damage totals are being reported but greatly under estimate the true damage as so many places are isolated and it will take days to reach them. It is a very sad time for Haiti. The crops didn't make because of the drought this summer and now those who did replant have lost everything with the flooding. Many lost all their livestock as well. Please keep Haiti in your prayers as the focus of hurricane Sandy shifts to the east coast of the US. For those of you on the east coast stock up. Even if the wind doesn't come ther is going to be lots of rain/snow that could make it hard for you to get out.
My friend wrote on facebook this morning. "Enough of this rain already! What is inconvenient for many of us is deadly for others. Those that live on the edge fall off in times like this."
It is so true. I am tired of being cold and wet and everything damp but I have a roof that doesn't leak, food and a way to cook it. Its a rough time for Haiti. I gave a ride to a lady today who was looking for charcoal so they could cook - they didn't eat yesterday because she couldn't find any...
