I can't believe how incredibly busy this week has been. I'm tired but oh such a good tired! We have been working in the forage garden. It has been raining every night (it's pouring now) so things are going to get a good start. We have planted 20 hibiscus, divided and replanted the elephant grass, reinforced the fencing (it has been a huge problem keeping animals out) and harvested jackbean seeds(they are nitrogen fixing and can be used as forage too). I picked up millet seed, sun hemp seed and seeds for a forage tree I don't know the name in english. We have moringa seeds planted. So much going on in the garden - I so love to be work in the garden! I'm sad we have to start over but it is a good chance to improve things. We also are trying a new technique of planting bamboo. You have a piece of bamboo with 2 closed ends and then you cut small holes so you can fill it with water and then plant it. It self waters - we'll see what happens.
The biggest news of the week (well one of the things) is we finally got our goats imported from the States. We received $5,000.00 from Whitworth College to help with feeding people in Haiti. Giving out fod or money to buy food is gone in the blink of an eye. But giving people a way to produce larger goats is a way to give them more meat and something that will keep going. So we imported 3 bucks and 2 does. There were problems getting the testing for import done and the baby goats grew up enough to get pregnant. So along with the 5 came 2 new kids (which are also does). We will use the bucks to breed to local goats so their owners will have larger offspring and we will use the does to produce more purebred goats so we can spread them out around the country. There should be enough money left to bring another group in the fall when this years kids are weaned. It was a very long and drawn out process but so worth the wait. They came in on Missionary Flights International. We had to get them approved to be an export site for live animals from the US. The all the testing....The boys came in extra large dog crates and mamas and babies came in large wooden crates. Baggage claim was a hoot - everyone wanted to know what was in the boxes and then when they found out they were goats. It was crazy! Sometimes I want to scream at the computer. It won't let me upload the goat photos...I'll keep typing and maybe it will change its mind ;). Now the battery is dying and there is no power. The big big stuff will have to wait! Just to say that GOD IS GOOD and getting ready to do super big things!
